Fun facts about Gujarati

A traditional saying is સોના જેઉં સાસરું પણ પિયર જેઉં નહીં (A groom’s house may be gold, but a bride’s parents’ home is priceless), meaning 'There’s no place like home'. This derives from the traditional custom where brides leave their childhood homes to live with their husbands’ families.

A common insult is to call someone a 'popat' or 'parrot', meaning 'a dumb person'.

Beware false friends between Gujarati and Hindi: Mota bhai means 'elder brother' in Gujarati but 'fat brother' in Hindi!
